"Effectively Communicating with Your Legislators"

Many people erroneously believe they do not have a voice in the legislative process.  Those same people also tend to believe that legislators only listen to people who make political campaign contributions.  This is simply not true!

The goal of effective communication is to establish a "relationship" with your legislators. You will know that the relationship has been formed when your legislators know your name, can put a face with the name, know your occupation and/or subject of your legislative interest and respond in a timely manner to your contacts. You will have done your job when a legislator contacts you first to solicit your opinion about a given issue!

Each of us can influence public policy in Indiana by making our knowledge available to our legislators. There are several approaches available to accomplish this goal:

Personal Visits
Letter writing
Telephone calls
Mailgrams and/or telegrams
E-mail via the Internet
