"Effectively Communicating with
Your
Legislators"
Telegrams,
Mailgrams and Faxes
Telegrams, mailgrams, faxes and other forms of electronic communication
(besides E-mail) are effective ways to notify legislators of your position when
time is limited and telephone contact has been impossible. The main
drawback to telegrams and mailgrams is the expense factor.
Traditionally, legislators paid great attention to electronic communications,
because it was felt (and studies confirmed) that only politically active
constituents with intense feelings on an issue would pay for a relatively
expensive form of communication when they were using telegrams and mailgrams.
As the cost of electronic communication significantly dropped and email and
faxes became prevalent, the use of telegrams and mailgrams has also
significantly dropped.
Legislators know that constituents with computers and access to fax machines
can send messages quickly and effectively in a pressure campaign.
