"Effectively Communicating with
Your Legislators"

Telephone Calls

Telephone calls can be very effective and are usually used when time is of the essence or when you have developed solid relationships with your legislators.

  • During the legislative session (typically January - March), it is best to call your legislators at the State House during business hours. You may call them at home over the weekend, but remember to be considerate.
  • During the interim, call them at home or at work during business hours. Use common sense rules of courtesy. Don’t call before 8:00 am or after 10:00 pm.
  • The first time you speak with a legislator, ask where he/she prefers to be contacted and follow this preference whenever possible.
  • When speaking with your legislator, speak clearly and identify your subject succinctly. If you’re interested or concerned about a particular bill, give the name and number. Try top stick to one subject per phone call.
  • Be prepared, organized and factual.
  • Tell them what you want. Be specific and reasonable (vote yes, vote no, etc.).
  • Request a response. Ask your legislator to state his/her position on the issue.
  • Listen carefully to the legislators comments and questions.
  • Thank the legislator for his/her time.
